The pupils of Dimotiko Scholeio Lemesou #28 were introduced to the game of cricket in a daylong session by Cyprus Cricket Association coaches Philip Bell and Andrew Mulkern with the help of sports teacher Nicolas Nicolaou, who was an invaluable help in providing the interpreting services.
Approximately 200 students aged between 10 to 12 years with no previous knowledge about the sport of cricket or any experience of hitting a ball with a cricket bat were divided in to 6 classes.
Each group was then further split into boys and girls with Andrew Mulkern showing them how to bat and hit the ball and Philip Bell demonstrating how to catch and throw properly.
Later on, children got involved in short competitive games of catching and throwing and finished the session with a game of cricket.
Overall, it was a successful day with the greater majority of pupils benefiting from the experience and showing a great deal of improvement even in a short session. The session seemed to go down well with the children as they demonstrated great enthusiasm in a fun and safe environment with plenty of laughter.
Cyprus Cricket Association extends its gratitude to the administration of the School for the opportunity of allowing the introduction of cricket at the School.
